Ok, I know this is probably revealing my age, something women don't usually do. ;) What is meant by old style drag racing? The local cruise is having one at an airstrip, anyone welcome. I thought about it, but then laughed it off since I've never actually had my car on the road, let alone a drag strip. I'm sure I'll still be putting things back together the day before, but it sounds like fun. Does everyone who races have standard transmissions? I'd thought about changing mine over, but (please don't shoot me) I plan on pulling my light horse trailer with my car and thought auto would be less hassle. Dad offered to let me drive his car, which told me his temporary engine, the same one I've got, must not be all that fast. I guess my question is, am I correct in thinking it's just two cars lining up and going for it, no timer or anything fancy involved?
I wonder how corvette brakes hold up to towing. Does anyone else use their car to pull anything? I'm thinking it will need updated suspension, though my trailer is light enough empty to move by hand.
StingRayPonyGirl, you should have no problem unless you're putting more than 2,000 lbs of load back there,..With my first vette, a fully stock '79 with automatic, L-48, I routinuely pulled a 17.5' boat with a 115 outboard,..the tongue weight probably was around 125 lbs. or so. Did not do suspension/shocks mods,..the power brakes always worked great with no problems. I just installed a u-haul hitch,.class 1 or 2 (I forget which one)and electric wiring connections for trailer light and it worked out just fine. :chevy Save The Wave!!! :)
Don't know for sure, but I'd assume your description of "old time" racing is accurate. The last time I saw a spectacle like that was in Daytona (bike week) where a group of guys get at the Deland Airport on an abandoned runway and go for it. Supposedly LOTS of money exchanges hands at that event. It was huge and a lot of fun.

I have a manual 4-speed transmission on my 68. Very shortly I will have a Tremek TKO (5-speed) installed. I personally think that "REAL" racing involves manual transmissions. Racing with automatic transmissions is just too boring!
What I understand under "Old Style Drag Racing" is:
People racing at night on a public street to win their opponents car (winner takes the losers car)
Dang if I know... I didn't know there was a new style and I used to race in the 60's. Maybe it means no Christmas Tree and no traps at the end... Just a starter with a flag and a Judge at the finish line. :p:

I asked my Mom about it and she told me when they used to race they had their friend Marvin, who was on crutches from MS, waving a flag at the start. She said it's lucky none of them got hurt, and Marvin never fell over. I can't imagine how they got him to do it, he's kind of fussy as far as I can see. Course I also don't see how Dad got her to ride in the car with him, she grabs the door handle at anything over 70. He must have been pretty persuasive back then. :)
A drag strip near me recently had a similar event.
They advertised it on the radio as "Like old school street racing, without the pesky jail time."
A friend of mine went (I didn't get the chance :( ) I can't remember if he said they did flashlight or flag starts but they had a guy by the tree to start them and then they had two guys at the end with flashlights. Whichever car won the guy on that side of the track would shine his light back towards the stands so the crowd could know who won. They did it lights out, no timing.
Only restrictions, car had to be on DOT tires, street legal, and running exhaust through mufflers.
As a fellow Texas horseman, I would not think of hauling even my smallest horse trailer, which is a 2-horse aluminum behind my Vette. First of all the toungue weight is a lot greater than the fellow who hauled his boat around, as you can adjust the position of the boat on the trailer to lighten the toungue. You cannot do this with a horse trailer. Secondly, every guide there is on horse trailering will tell you the Vette is too short a wheelbase to safely tow a horse trailer. And last, if your horses are as big as mine, you are putting a lot of weight behind that Vette. :nono: :nono:

Hmm, good points, thank you. When Dad mentioned pulling things it was with a boat also. I had no idea there were so many horse people interested in Vettes.
Yeah - "Old Time" must be the seat-of-your pants racing and your correct in that there will be no lights, timing equip., etc. - Hopefully they'll have a cute little dragstrip girl with flags !
Anyways....it'll be an Amercian Graffitti type of event - open airstrip - 2 cars - flags go down and you put the pedal to the medal & shift like a wild ape !
Back in the 60's nothing topped 4-on-the floor ! :D
"Old School" I'm sure is refering to "run what you brung" thus meaning Heads Up racing. So both cars leave the line at the same time, and both have an equal advantage, much different than "Bracket racing". :U
