Single plane?
What "best performance" means to u may be entirely different to others. But a single plane will make the most top end power.
Here are a couple that will fit under nearly any stock hood:
Weiand - X-CELerator Intake Manifold PART #: 7547-1
Edelbrock - Torker II (non-EGR) #5001*
Victor Jr. #2975 has been know to fit also but not guaranteed
Holley no longer has a low single plane intake.
For experience i knew someone that had 11 sec C3 with a 383" that used the Torker II.
Do you intend to use the OEM air cleaner? If so, intakes with mounting pad heights higher than offered by the Edelbrock #3701 may cause the cleaner to impact the underside of your hood.
I was considering the Year One 350 with vortec heads with an Edelbrock performer intake but, from my research, I would have to use a drop-base air cleaner to clear my hood on my '80 L48.

Let us know what you find out.
If your not planning on revving the crap out of it I would go with an RPM Air Gap. If looking for ever last ponie I would get port matched ( not by someone in their car port either ) Vic Jr.
Most fit with a drop base air cleaner. If you want to keep it stock you are limited to a few poor quality intakes

For my C1 the factory crate engine intake for the Fast Burn works fantastic on my ZZ430...this thing will rev well beyond the 6000 red line using a drop base 14" breather and open element filter. Had to mill down the top of the cover bolt to below the profile of the top cover. This thing is incredibly quick. Had to install some 60's era ladder bars to keep the pinion out of my floorboard! The stock GM HP Vortec intake is just fine.
The seemingly obvious answer is to use the ZZ4 intake if you're building a ZZ4 clone.
I just replaced a Performer RPM with a ZZ4 intake in my 79 with no noticeable loss in performance. I did gain some hood clearance (both fit with the stock air cleaner) so I can use a heat insulator spacer.
