I put high flow (Magnaflow) mufflers on my smallbock over the winter. I find that they too loud for my taste, especially at lower RPM's.
How much improvement could be expected by adding an H crossover pipe across the exhaust pipes? It's either that or switch back to the stock mufflers.
Try the H-pipe and if unsatisfied you can still go back to stock mufflers. The benefits of an H-pipe go beyond sound deadening even with stock mufflers.
Just take it to a good muffler shop they can put a crossover tube close to the engine. It would be a lot cheaper than buying a prefab h pipe. Cost me $20 to do it. Made a big difference in the amount of drone my C4 had with flowmaster 40's
If you don't like the sound of those welded tin can mufflers your best bet is the Walker "Dynomax" series.....the tin can mufflers are all right for Camaros and Mustangs or if you like noise, but not Vettes......
The Dynomax are really good tried and true
Clip of the Hooker super comp turbos.
know on a milder motor they are much quieter.
Nevr ever got low pitched hum or resonance which is what I liked.
Put something else on.....make more power but got resonance now lol
Pick your poison or go stock
An X will lower the volume significantly, at least it did on my big block.
I have no experience with H pipes but I don't see why that wouldn't do the same.
So, this morning I went to Meineke Muffler in Mountainside, NJ. They welded in a 2" H type balance pipe just behind the center crossmember.
Nice clean job. Nice guys.
1)The drone is very slightly improved. It quits a little bit lower in the RPM range. Maybe within the margin of error.
2)The exhaust sound is definitely less rowdy. I might miss that.
3)The sound levels at higher RPM's and loads are VERY much reduced. Highway cruising is very pleasant now. And under WOT, I can hear the induction sound again. Before the H pipe, the sound was completely drowned out by the bellowing exhaust.
4) I had to richen the idle fuel screws a half turn. It was idling a bit lean after the installation.
5) All in all, an H pipe is a good thing. I'm pleased.
