I have my steering box off and have washed it out adjusted all the adjustments and need to know what I can use as a gear lube. Info I have says use #1051052 (13 oz.) which meets GM Specification GM 4673M of equivalent. What would be equivalent and where can I get it?
The steering box uses a special lub (kind of a "dry" grease) but it is available at your local Chevy dealer. Sorry but don't have the part number here at the office with me.
This was posted awhile back over on the NCRS forum by Joe Lucia. Thought you may find it of interest.
"The grease originally specified by GM for use in ALL 63-82 Corvette steering boxes was GM #1052084. In May, 1997 this product was discontinued and replaced for all applications by GM #12377985.
I do not know, for sure, which grease might be the best overall grease for a Corvette steering box. However, the only currently available grease that I know, for sure, meets the GM specifications for Corvette steering boxes is the GM #12377985. So, that's the only one I use. Also, since the 12377985 REPLACED the 1052084 grease, I fully expect that the two are compatible. If not, GM would likely have simply described the status of 1052084 as "discontinued". "
