Are you guys aware that the factory used steel head gaskets on the aluminum head BB's? Believe it....
Sure, I am. We used the "tin" or "steel" head gaskets for years. Basically on all pre Vortec motors. Since all of our units are Vortec now, we have switched to the composit presealed type from GM. Al
Sorry, but using a copper gasket with an aluminum head would be a disastor. Copper and Aluminum are on the opposisite ends of the metalurgic table and corrode severly......
As for the "tin" head gaskets, when we used them, I always painted with aluminum spray paint for the seal. when the paint was tacky, not wet, but tacky, we installed and torqued down. I still have few "tin" head gaskets in stock. Have not used in years, Al
you are obviously not familiar with the Chevy L-88 and the Chrysler A-990 Race Hemi....Both as OE gaskets used a copper shim gasket...if you feel its necessary to continue your statement as the Gospel you can take it up with Chrysler and GM ....Or you may try Donavon Engineering and see the gasket racers use in his all aluminum Hemi engines....Oh and by the way I drag race all three engines in my 'Walts Puffers' National champion race cars, drag boats and and assorted toys
The 1094 is a rubber-coated, MLS gasket. Galvanic action doesn't apply as the gasket is coated. I don't know of a non-rubber-coated 1094 Fel Pro gasket.
Using a standard steel shim gasket isn't a good idea on a stock production block - for the most part, the block and head decks aren't smooth enough.
Cometic gaskets are excellent, but pricey - and not really required on a build making < 1.2 HP/CID.
I thought road racing guys got all the chicks. I see now that's not the case

Checked out your photos, INSANE TOYS! Very indeed.
Any way back to the head gaskets. If you need a HG in the .015 - .020 range the MLS shim will work fine. The Summit site shows a coated and non coated. FWIW Direct Connection recomended 2 thick damp coats of aluminum paint on the steel shim gaskets for the B/RBs keep in mind that was iron to iron back in the 70s
Been researching head gaskets also. The general opinion is to only use the Felpro 1094 thin gasket on a newly decked block. If using on a stock block you may get leaks. The better option is the Victor Reinz 5746 or this GM http://www.summitracing.com/parts/NAL-10105117. They may be the same gasket. The bore on these gaskets are smaller than the Felpro ,so won't loose than much on the compression. When I do my head swap I'll be using these.....
I have yet to experience a leak with a 1094 on a stock block when doing quite a few Vortec tops on stock GEN Is.
There's a fair bit of myth out there that the Ra on a stock block is too rough for an MLS gasket...which is correct, but the 1094 is a rubber-coated MLS and easily accomodates the rougher surface of an untouched stock block.
Additionally, it's hard for me to imagine someone using this gasket on a fresh build as typically even mild performance engines are zero-decked...so an .015 compressed thickness gasket is clearly not an option.
Well, just ordered Felpro 1094 head gaskets from Advance Auto (got them for $39.64 for the pair, no shipping, using a discount code!), so I guess we'll know in a few days. I've never seen one, except in photos, but I can't imagine the coating would be very thick. Is it fairly obvious that there is a coating on it?
