Default SBC header studs Question

I order some header studs from ARP, nice product only the nuts that came with them will not clear the side of the header tubes, I have seen 3/8 nuts that measure less than 9/16 acreoss the flats in the past, maybe a speacialty item, any one had simuliar experieces with studs for mounting headers to the heads? I may have to go back w/ small hex head bolts? really don't want to go digging up the tubes. Thanks

have you considered the round bolts with an allen key in the center?

Stainless allen head. Did have to cut one to make a stud for #8 where a bolt will not work. Dont hack up the headers to make something work. Just take a few extra minutes and do it the right way. I,ve see to many hack up there flanges, use vise grips etc. Name: Picture 046.jpg

You have to get the ARP universal 5/16th 100-1109 stud kit.

page 58

http://www.arp-bolts.com/pages/viewcatalog.shtml

As you can see I had to even grind down the rounded bottom of few of these 5/16ths to clear 1 3/4 hooker S/C

this is my new 434 ci to replace the 383

this is my older 383 with AFR 210 heads

Thanks and yours looks great, I have several types of header bolts, allens included, my problem is I don't have a flange joining all my tubes together to keep them aligned,

Thanks MIke

Mike the number I gave you is for the one inch Universal 5/16th. The 3/4 inch might be what I have.

The red is high temp permatex silicone. It glues the nuts in place and they never get loose. I use FelPro blue steel gaskets and they last for years and even motor changes

I keep the solid roller 383 in a box as a spare. I had used it for a couple of years and I pulled it out and rebuilt it. I replaced it with a high end motown 427 sbc. I had to reinstall the 383 once when I broke the crank shaft in my 427 SBC about 6 months later. I bored it out to 434 and put in $2000 dollar crankshaft so it would never break again and installed it a few weeks later. It is really a sweet 383 that I use 7500 rpm as a red line. I was having so much fun with it, a 5 speed, and a 4.11 rearend that it was almost a shame to pull it back out.

I was competing in a points race for vintage production road racing and I couldn't miss any events

Very sad day! 90 mph and then real bad noises. Stabbed in the clutch and coasted to a stop. Loaded it on the trailer and we got home early afternoon and had the 383 in and running that eve and I was back out running the track the next morning

This is a 4 inch stroker lightweight 4340 with 350 main bearing size

We are clear off topic, but I got screwed at the race shop that balanced my 427 sbc. Right on the crank it had a tag that said don't balance this crank with more than three holes on the rear throw. the flat rate worker caused not only my blow up , but some other sprint car 410 ci motors to save time. He got fired before my motor went and they worked with me on the rebuild. So even with the $2000 crank my loss was about $4500

oh I have an ATI 6.3/8ths

This the motor that blew apart in less than six months
