Default Checking push rod length

I am putting a motor together on a stand. I need to get push rods ordered so today I assembled a couple rockers on valve stem ends covered with dry eraser marker and rolled the crank over a few turns. The marks on the valve stems are centered, but I noticed that the valves didn't lift anywhere near .525" as the lifters are new and not pumped up with oil yet. So I'm guessing that I will have to pump up the lifters before I can check this? I wasn't going to fill with oil and prime till it was installed and ready to fire. Dave

You are supposed to use special low tension springs for that. They just barely keep the valve closed.

I tried that method too and had the same issue you did. I went and bought one of these tools and it really takes the guess work out.

Yeah you can get the light pushrod checking springs for little coin

You can also set up a dial indicator and measure the cam lobe lift pretty easily
