I just read the post earlier about the 71 oil pressure gauge...the one in my 74 is different than that but it's dead as well...any suggestions? Is it the sending unit? If so, where's it at on the block?
Is the '74 the same gauge as the '71? That is, is there a live oil line running to the back of the gauge in the dash? If so, there is a fitting right next to the distributor on the back of the block - a little brass attachment with a single oil line coming out of it and going into the firewall. It's not really a sending unit, more of an access hole, really. The gauge does all the work. You might check there to see if the line is kinked or broken, or maybe the brass fitting is clogged with gunk - who knows? Not a bad idea to take the assembly apart and clean it all up. It's easier than taking out the gauge first! I think Ecklers or Mid America sells a replacement oil line kit - that might be a better way to go, and not very expensive.
If the '74 is an electric unit, I'm afraid I don't have the answer for you!
I started my 69 last night for the first time in 3 years and noticed that I had no oil pressure also. I shut it down right away and connected up another after market gauge that I had and fired it up again and I had 60lbs of pressure. Tonight I'm going to take a look at the factory gauge and see if I can figure out what its problem is. I wonder what actually can go wrong in a mechanical oil pressure gauge?
The 74 is an electrical unit. Check the wire going from the sending unit to the guage, check the connection at the gauge and if that fails you may have to replace the gauge. They are available from the major suppliers.
Pedro is right on.
It is that big ugly thing that is shaped like a bell...you cant miss it. Also there is NO live oil line going into the passenger compartment...dont worry.
