I have a short question about the 79 air filter (original).
I would like to use my Holley spread bore. However I do like the original filters cold air intake. Can an original filter fit on the top of the Holley (cannot test this since I do not have the original filter).
Your air filter will not fit over a Holley. I modified one years ago to fit over a Holley by cutting away everything that didn't fit, and welding in new sheet metal, but it won't fit without substantial modification to the air cleaner base.
The factory 79' fresh air intake set up is pretty nice, and I would try and use something similar. Don't understand why you're wanting to use the Holley, as the factory Q-Jet is probably better. Depending on what modifications you did to your engine, the Q-Jet may need some rejetting/tuning work, but don't under estimate these carbs.
Lot of conflicting info. So what is it now. I have one I can buy, but not if I cannot use it.
As for the Holley : this engine is way too much modified to work correctly with a Qjet. I even doubt it might be big enough at 650 cfm to support the kind of rpm this engine can run. Nonetheless it's only temporary since as soon as the engine is broken in, it'll get tossed out for a itb efi system.
I have had a Holley 4175 650 CFM spreadbore replacement carb on my 78 since 1985 on the OEM aluminum intake and the cold air air filter housing from the 78/79 C3's fits perfectly with zero mods. The Stock L-82 engine made 233 RWHP on the dyno recently with a dead cylinder (#6-90 PSI versus 160-165 PSI in the other cylinders) with Shorty headers and 2.5 inch duals. Fellow forum member Karol with his 78 L-82 with a Q-jet, performer intake, different cam than the L-82 (unknown which one) and 2.5 inch magna flow duals, and underdrive pulleys did about 245 RWHp on the same dyno. No difference in the performance of the Q-jet versus the 4175 spreadbore Holley-real world. I have had both carbs and would say the Q-jet gets SLIGHTLY better mileage but drivability is not as good as my 4175.
