I have read the oil sticky's. I want to make this simple, so here is a simple question.
'Simple question' and 'oil' cannot exist in the same sentence. If you want a recommendation of what's a good NON-synthetic oil and available at Wallyworld, I could suggest something but this would just start the whole debacle over again.
Many mainstream auto retailers are carrying more oil options for classic cars with flat-tappet cams...but a mainstream retailer like Wally World isn't going to carry much.
I've been looking at the Mobile 1 High Mileage stuff; it claims SL for non SM/SN covered grades - I'm just waiting for an email/call from my contacts there.
According to Exxon Mobil, Mobil 1 High Mileage 10W-30 and 10W-40 has 1000 PPM phos and 1100 PPM Zinc and is rated SL. If so it will be fine for a stock flat tappet vehicle and is not on the list. http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/...duct_Guide.pdf
Probably not enough interest for it's own forum, but an oil/spark plug/fuel octane/Holley vs. Q-jet forum might be doable!
In all seriousness, though, I am with longbros on this one. I don't want to hunt around and track down my oil, I just want to go down to Wallyworld and buy it. The Mobil 1 High Mileage 10W-30 sounds good. Although I have heard many say that a synthetic oil should not be used during initial break in. I'm cool with using a special break in oil, though. I like the idea of using a synthetic oil for normal running, too. After I do the cam and head swap, I will basically have all brand new gaskets and seals. And the price ain't too bad, either, for a full synthetic oil:
