Default Help with telescopic steering wheel - 1978

For some reason my steering wheel doesn't stay in one place...the telescope doesn't lock in place. The tilt works fine and as for the telescope I can freely move it back and forth...the problem is that the telescope part doesn't stay in one place...am I missing a screw or do I just have a screw loose

Any help would be much appreciated!

1. remove the negative lead on the battery
2. pop the horn button off
3. carefully look at the horn shims, etc. remove and but all in a plastic bag
4. you now see the cast metal ring for locking you tele, there is a large star screw in the middle, and 2 small phillips on either side.
5. loosen the 2 small phillips screws (or carefully remove them) DONT DROP THEM DOWN THE COLUMN :smash:
6. turn the locking ring ALMOST all the way to the right
7. use a large phillips screwdriver, tighten the star screw until your tele locks
8. put back the 2 small screws. doesn't matter what holes they go around the star screw
9. check the operation
10. installation of horn is reversal of disassembly :smash:

One more hint! Take a large towel and roll it up. Stuff it up between the windshield and the instrument panel pad. Leave a short tail from the towel to form a table. As you disassemble the small pieces from your column place them on the towel, in order, in a row. The rolled up towel prevents the pieces from slipping away and becoming a permanent part of your defroster system. The tail makes a good no slip surface.

When you reassemble the column the parts they are right in front of you and right in order. :yesnod:

I had the same problem last year, member " thejaf " provided excellent step by step info to fix this. Is quite easy as thejaf mentioned remove the large center star screw and then the two smaller screws on each side then turn the tele to the right and re assemble- hope it works out fine
