Default Outside Mirrors 76-77 models

Yes Sir; I bought A right hand mirror for my 1977, which came with a template. I laid the template out an find that it is in a different location, than the driver's side mirror. Is this really the way the factory laid these out when they came with two mirrors?? Or should I remark the holes the same as the driver's side? I bought this car from the Original owner & she said the drivers side was on the car brand new, when they drove it off the show room floor. Thanks for your help. Have a great Thanksgiving. Gene

If you are referring to the chrome mirror, then the factory never put one of those, on the passenger side door. The chrome passenger side mirror, was strictly available as a dealer installed option.

Drivers side doors, came with a nut plate in the door, that the mirror base was attached too. Because there was no passenger side mirror, the door didn't have a nut plate in it. The mirror base is attached to the passenger door with 2 Well Nuts, which work like dry wall anchors. The right hand mirror kit, came from GM with the Well Nuts and a template, to properly locate the holes.

77's could be had with a factory installed passenger side mirror, but it came as a pair of painted "sport" mirrors.

I can't say for sure how the template positions the holes in the passenger side door, but I may be able to check it tomorrow. I have some original GM templates, and a pile of old doors. I can compare the right side mirror template, to the position of the factory holes in a drivers side door.

I'll try to take a look in the morning.

Gene,

I have a 77 that came with the painted "sport" mirrors on both sides. I would have to measure to be exact but looking at them they are both in the same spot for each door. As for the chrome ones, I wouldn't know to steer you in the right direction. If you want me to get exact measurements on the passenger side for you let me know and I will get you the best I can.

Not the worlds best mechanic or anything but always ready and willing to dive in "***** deep" (excuse my french!!! LOL)

Gene-
Before you drill any new holes have someone hold the new mirror where you want to install it just to make sure it can be adjusted enough to be functional. I've screwed these things up more than once but not on a fiberglass car.
P.S. I'd make 'em match side to side if I could.

The paint shop installed my right mirror and it's mounted back farther than the drivers side, it is barely usable, should have been the same as the left side.

I don't know about the 76-77 years, but on my 1970 when I added a passenger side mirror, the template matched the location on the drive door. I would try to match the driver and passenger sides if possible. Make sure it will be useable at that location. I think it would look weird if they were different.

Yes Sir; gbvette62 is going to check his old doors for me., for location. Yes I think it would look weird for them to be in different spots also. I wouldn't put it on, but on multilane freeways, it is really needed. Thanks you guys, I really appreciate your in-put on this, & your help. Gene
