if you're going to pay to rebuild them, let the machine shop do the disassembly, cleaning and reassembly, probably run from $200 and up per head depending on amount of work needed.

I agree. I just paid $800.00 for two sets of sbc heads. The shop dissambled, hot tanked and reassembled them. That included a 3 angle valve job, seals, one set was slightly surfaced, and one set needed a few guides. One set was stock (487's) and one set were SR Torquers.
Going to pull the heads next week and take into a reputable shop. Now to decide if I should spend money on these or go to aluminum. Not a matching numbers car.
Just paid $780 for new valve guides, springs, valves, valves seats, retainers, locks, magnafluxed, and cleaned and ready for paint. Heads are open chamber lt-1.
Wow, I must have gotten a good deal? I paid $400 for hot tank, deck, guides and valve and seat grind but for a few hundred more I should of went aftermarket . I would advise the same for you unless your in shows with an all stock number matching competition ?
Found these on ebay for $635 free shipping not sure what I need yet as I don't know much about the engine I have. It came in the car.

Machine shop said the cast iron heads need complete rebuild. Quoted $450. Said that was most likely the cause of the excessive oil consumption. It was using about a quart every 200 miles. Since the engine isn't original thinking about biting it and go for a crate motor.
