Have a guy with a 200r4 with 15,000 miles on it for $200. Said it is from a 87 Monte SS, which is one of the desirable 200's. I ask him to send me the code on the yellow tag and he responds KDF. Of all the documentation I can find ANYWHERE, there is no KDF. We go back and forth, I keep searching, still can't find a KDF.
I try another approach and ask him if he knows if the trans. is original. Sends me back that he contacted the previous owner and found out it is from an 86 Grand National, an even more desirable trans. But, it should have a BRF code.
So, anyone heard or know of a KDF 200r4 trans code? Not going to do anything with it unless I can identify, but don't want to pass up something that may be a nice stout trans.
I am sure you have been combing the net for info. The nomenclature of this transmission is confusing. Make sure you do your research for 200-4R and the other variations also 2004R,200R4 and 200-R4.
I am far from an expert but I am doing this conversion right now and just happen to be documenting the process. Here are two pics you may be interested in. One is a example tag and the other is the "pink" valve body, this is the performance valve body and gov you are looking for. You gotta pull the pan to verify.
Yeah that's my thought too, not anything good. I sent another e-mail asking to verify he sent the right letters, and to ask if any chance there was any paperwork on the, assumed, rebuild. he replied "No paperwork, take it or leave it". To me, that's getting dickish, so I respond "Pass, thanks".

$200 is a good price for a rebuildable core, once they're rebuilt and you spec them for a V8 with the upgrades, they are all pretty much the same no matter what the tags say. if you're lucky enough to find one of the gn/cutlass/etc. good for you , but they are getting scarce. if you're handy with tools, they are simple to rebuild and there's plenty of info
btw if it was behind a V8 its better
