OK guys, I have searched & read previous posts, but I am having some issue replacing a broken rear wheel stud, and would like some advice. I plan to use the "drill the rear shield" method of inserting the stud- once I get that far! Anyway, the wheel, caliper, and rotor are off, and the broken stud is now "loose". I have never worked on drum brakes, and am kinda stuck (I hoped things would have been visually obvious once I got here, but no).
Questions:
1. What to do next- I assume some of these parking brake bits need to be moved/removed? Do I follow the entire proceduere in the manual for removing the shoes? Oh yeah, and did I mention that the adjustor nut at the bottom is FROZEN SOLID. It will not move in either direction.
2. Once the old stud is removed, what is the optimal location for drilling the hole in the parking brake shield? If I am looking at the right rear wheel (from outside the wheel well), 3 o'clock, 9 o'clock, where?
Thanks for any help. I am probably going to stop here for the evening, until I get some more advice.
Gently pull the bottoms of the brake shoes apart. The adjuster should come out. There is a spring in there also, leave it in or take it out, doesnt matter. Make sure spring is in there when you put it back together. With the adjuster out of the way, you can remove stud at 6 o'clock position. While adjuster is out you can free it up.

I did the exact thing. I took a punch and put a small ding in the backing plate to get the new stud in. I also screwed the expander in all the way to get it back in for the parking brake adjustment and then, once in place, turned the spanner to re-tighten. It is a PITA, but take your time and you should be fine.
