I have a stable reading now of about half a tank after cleaning up the sender clip for the wire and relocating the ground.
Not sure if I have half a tank or not though... I have about 4inch of gas when I put a rod in the tank to measure the depth.... Does that sound about half??
Sounds like less than half to me. How many gallon tank do you have? I have my tank out right now. When I get home I will measure what a half tank is on mine and let you know. May be a little different on yours because of your tank being a little different.

Pull an ohms reading from the sender and see where it is at, this sounds a bit low but not by much.
If the sender reads 0-90 ohms now.. then you may have a bent float arm. You'd just have to play with this to get it tweaked in.
you could possibly bend the float to restrict the output.. or just replace the sending unit. I'd replace it..
Normally I would replace it but I want to eventually go to a in tank electric fuel pump with sump and possibly an aluminum tank. So, for now I fixed the problem by putting resistance in parallel with the sending unit resistance. Tested good laying on the floor behind the car. Can't wait to see if it works when I get it all together.
yes the tail lights work, it looks like the black and pink car run to the dash area.
Not sure were that harness would be grounded on a 79... anyone know?
The black wire is sodered to other ground wires inside the harness. There are two areas of the rear of the body harness that have this multi-ground configuration. One is just a little way into the car (drivers side corner of storage compartment) and the other one is further down the harness and is all sodered together with the ground wires for all the lights. Then there is one wire that comes off the multi-ground just inside the car that screws to the frame under and behind the antenna. On my car (75) the ground wire for the gauge (black wire) goes to the multi-ground closer to the end of the harness. I have pics if anyone needs them.
