is there a light for this? i couldnt see one when i peeked in the side of the console and mine is dark at night...
im going to be taking the console apart soon and its on "the list for when im in there" LOL
On my 74 there's one wire with bulb that sits under the unit and another wire with bulb that sits underneath the gear selector. While I don't know if this is stock, both do light up at night!

74's have a different console than a 79. 77-82 heater controls are illuminated from on top.
Sign, I hate to have to say this, but I have lotsa experiences wit those 78-82 consoles, and am forced to sell the truth, they are one crappy cheap plastic junk design, the guy who allowed that design to actually see production should be shot...period....
you will find everything from broken plastic heater controlls with over stiff cable shrouds breaking every piece of plastic to crazy cardboard carpeted panels on the sides, to that damn-able top plastic bezel with the screw holes all split and torn apart, with no hope of repair.....most of then have a block of wood under the HVAC controls to prop it into position, then glued in place...
IF you can devise a way to fix it correctly and have it last longer than 3 years, you will be a first....
It don't give you proper lightning because you probably don't have the good bulb. The correct one have a kind of magnifying glass at the end to project toward the controls. You'll have to go to your GM dealer for that one. That's where I found mine. They did have to order it, a pack of 10, so I bought 2 to have a spair. Works great, now it's bright at night.
