Default Transmission Shifter Nut

Just got a 200-4R installed. I have to replace the shifter nut to replace with the Shiftworks. I am catching the blues and I have seen them broken off before. Any tips or tricks for taking the nut off?

Are you talking about the nut on the selector shaft on the side of the trans or another nut somewhere?

Unless someone changed or crossthreaded it, it should come off with a normal wrench. I'm thinking that they're all either 9/16 or 15mm wrench size. I' have seen a couple of them come loose, one we crimped the nut very slightly, and another one just got a drop of locktite

My kit.
http://shiftworks.com/corvette-68-81.htm
1972-76 #SC240. the new one is the one the far left, the "L" shaped one. everything else is attached.

On the tranny now.

Just the "U" shaped portion though (not the additional part with the long slot)

Not trying to make this complicated at all. I really just need to get the nut off without breaking it out. But so you all can see what I have going on this is it.

I have a spare 200-4r now with the same lever bolt broken (how I received it). So when I started to this nut off I got so much resistance and stopped.

Thats dead on TimAT. 15mm. When I turn it the the selector goes all the way forward...fine at first. but with more pressure its not budging. I was thinking of sliding my big screwdriver through the holes to prevent the selector from turning, but I want KNOWN SOLUTIONS first.

Give it a shot of your favorite penetrating oil and let it set for a bit. GM didn't use anything from the factory other than correct torque to keep that nut on there.
You mentioned it got tight, give it a shot of oil and run it back on. Work it both directions. I'd guess there's a little rust and dirt causing problems.

I think I'm seeing what's going on here.

That lever on the shaft has several detents in it. It rotates fairly easily to the end(s) of it normal travel. Rotate the lever so it's all the way counterclockwise, stick a big screwdriver thru the holes in the lever and then turn the nut off. I think the nut is tight, and you're rotating the shaft to it's stop.

Question then. I filled the converter and put it on. Im 99% sure it is on all the way...t clunks, but is it normal for it to still be a little wobbly on the shaft?

And is it even necessary to fill it first? I have heard mixed feelings about that.
