I have my tank out and I need to know whether I should remove the bladder from the tank. It seems to still be okay. No sign of fuel on the wrong side of the bladder. What was the actual purpose of these bladders and if I remove it will I have trouble with the tank leaking.
I was surprised to find out that the tank was made of steel. Weighs 22 lbs with the bladder still in it. Is there a quality aluminum replacement? Preferable one that has a sending unit that can be replaced from the fuel door and has an electric pump.
Do not remove the bladder. It was designed to 1) be more corrosion resistant, and 2) help maintain the integrity of the gas tank in a crash.
If the gas tank on my '74 ever leaks, I wonder if I could install a replacement tank with a rubber lining.
I removed mine so I could install a baffled electric pump for my tpi. The inside of my tank was absolutely rust free. One other benefit was that it gained some extra fuel capacity (always welcome on a Corvette) and lost the not insignificant weight of the bladder itself. The downside was giving up the extra bit of safety the bladder provided in a rear end crash.
A 78 and later tank will not fit in a 75 to 77, but it is possible to fab your own in-tank pump that will install without cutting into the tank (Please see my posting for a write-up and photos).

Thanks for the info. I looked at your thread. That is the route I want to go one day. I don't have FI yet so I guess it can wait.
How much more fuel were you able to put in your car after removing the bladder? About how much does that thing weigh. Did you also remove the shield on top of your tank?
