reverse gear popping out

I just bought a 1973 corvette convertible, I have had it for about a week now, and now I have noticed that when I put it in reverse, it slides back out. Also, I am now unable to put the key in lock position since the car needs to be in reverse to put it in lock. Can anyone please help me with a suggestion? Thanks in advance!

could be the bolt that holds the lever to the trans is loose or worn

Take a look at wear and adjustment of your shifter arms.

Yes. Step one is to adjust the linkage.

next step is to check the reverse drive cable which controls the steering column and allows the key to rotate fully and be removed.

if you have a factory shifter you have to use a neutral key that slides through and aligns all 3 linkage arms on the shifter and with the trany arms in neutral position make your linkage adjustments.
