Default Electrical Problem...HELP!

OK....I had the alternator short out and it burned the wire from the alternator to the ignition box (the one at the base of the steering column). Replaced the alternator, the burnt wire and the ignition box.

NOW (with all new parts), the car won't shut off when you turn the key to the "off" position on the column....EXCEPT when I unplug the connector that goes into the alternator....then car turns off!

WHY???

NOW GET THIS...if I reverse the wires on the plug, the car starts (like it's suppose to) and turns off (like it's suppose to)..IT JUST COMPLETELY DRAINS THE BATTERY in about 3 hours!!

Other than draining the battery, does reversing the wires, hurt anything???? Right now, the connector is unplugged and the car is not moving from it's spot until I figure out the problem!

What type of ignition box do you have? My MSD requires a diode on the alt wire in order to turn off when I turn the key off.

I'm sure it's just stock. I do know it's defitinely not MSD (I wish). Should they all have diodes?

it means that as long as your alternator is spinning , your are providing the ignition with the 12 plus volts it needs to keep firing the plugs, you fix it by getting a wire diagram of your system and start chasing wires and make sure nothing else is burned or crossed. a multimeter is a good tool in this issue.
