Default Jack placement for ball joint check
I want to check my ball joints on my 76 for wear. Do I place the jack as clode to the wheel as possible or more towards the center of the car to have the spring more unloaded?

Put the jack under the control arm.

Put it close to the ball joint. Then use a pry bar and lift between the floor and the tire.
