Still trying to figure out issue with hurst shifter. I have taken a 1973 Muncie M-20 out of a 1973 corvette but it was a donor car so can't be sure it was original. Code is P3C01A which I believe confirms M-20 made in March 1, 1973. Tail shaft number is 397864 and has one bolt hole at top of tail and two below. Cover plate number is 335308. Hopefully the photo shows up below. I have a Hurst Competition Plus from a 1970 (3216274) and photo of the shifter and adapter plate below. The adapter plate is wrong for this transmission. I'm installing into a 1972 convertible. The questions I have are: is the transmission for a Vette, Chevelle or Camaro (I've had differing opinions); can this shifter be used for this transmission; if so anyone know the correct adapter plate by number? As always thanks for the help.
While I presume you have exhausted all resources of fitment, I remember having a puzzling moment when I attempted to put mine on. Did you try to line it up so that the three recessed holes are what connect to the tail? If so and it doesnt line up, my intention was not to insult your intelligence!
Page 43 has information pertaining to parts in installation kit #3738611 which is the kit for a C3.
As for how to tell what car your box came out of by the numbers, I couldnt help you, but if its supposed to be a 70's muncie from a Vette, I think it should have a fine spline input, and large spline output.
PS I believe the numbers you are listing for the shifter part number are actually the US Patent numbers if you look carefully at that photo
Thanks guys. I wondered if that 8008 plate might work. I too thought the back half of the tranny looked different from other Muncie's I'd seen but did some searching on the net looking at alot of photos and saw similar ones for Camaros. Then I checked the Corvette-Restoration web site (invaluable site if your doing a body off) and noticed his Muncie is the same. I'll keep at it. Thanks again.
Most of the muncie tails have the multiple shift boss positions. Although some of the chevy and other GM divisions used the 3 boss only tails. If you're worried about someone mixing parts, the tail just has to be correct for the output shaft, 27 splinr th350 vs 32 spline th400.
As for the adapter plate, what doesn't line up?
I had a th400 and the output fits the Muncie I'm swapping in.
My adapter plate 6939 does not line up to the three bolt bosses. If I line up with top boss the two lower bosses don't line up. Looks like the 8008 adapter plate might have the spread needed to align.
Ok, your plate is probably for one of the other shifter positions on trans with multiple locations. Looks like the 8008 is drilled for multiple mount locations.
Note, if the rods are for that application, they may not be the correct length for yours.
