purchased car on Friday, and when i picked it up.. i didn't really notice a check engine light..... but when it got dark out... i noticed it. but the thing is... its not the whole square thats lit up. its just a bar underneath it....
and you can only see it at night... is it reallly on? ???????? and what can it mean?
thanks for all your help guys
Probably not but to be sure, find the diagnostic connector and short out the test pin to put it into diagnostic mode. You will get the codes flashing to tell for sure. The procedure for you car and connector location is in the basic repair manuals like Hayes or Clymer.
It should be a yellowish light when lit. Does it come on momentarily when you start the car? It should for a few seconds to let you know it is working. Most likely you are getting light from a gauge backlight.
This might sound really dumb, but has the light been covered up? When I bought mine somebody had neatly put some sort of tape over the check engine light. The text could be read through it (just) but the light couldn't be seen when lit, apart from at the very edges in the dark.
I know it sounds unlikely, but it wasn't until I had a really close squint at it that I saw that it had been covered over.
The light should come on strong when you turn the ignition on & don't start the engine.
