I have two kinds 9 and 10 by 17 for the front. For using 255/45/17 or 275/40 or 295 slicks. 4 inch bs

Since you said "17 inch without modding" 17X8s with 4" backspace have the same width and backspace as the factory 15" wheels. As far as tires go 255/50-17s are the same overall diameter as the stock 255/60-15s. This should be a no drama upgrade.

I tried the 255/50/17 fronts with 4 inch bs and being so tall and fat side walls they touched the frame on lock and lock

I did this on my 80, with AR TT ll's. Perfect fit. The only "drama" is better looks and significantly improved ride and handling.

I did the exact same thing, AR TT 2's and I went with the Nitto 255's in 255-50/17 and not a single issue on my 81, bolted right up and hit nowhere, look at wheelsforless.com, they were the best price and awesome service and delivery was quick with all new lug nuts and free shipping!! Tires mounted and balanced just bolt em on.

What year is yours? The later model C3's were factory modded a tad to accept the wider otional tires.
