I just purchased my first '73 Vette. The car is clean and allover tech state seems fine but there seems to be tranny leaking a bit. As I'm new to the Vette tech stuff, can you please check and advise how difficult is to solve this? Thank you.
...and here's the point where a picture needs to be inserted, unfortunately not sure how to paste it from a local disk - can anyone advise please?

is it wet buy the flex plate cover ?mite be leaking where the gear shaft goes into the trans casing.if the car sits long enough ,fluid from the converter can drain into the pan raising the fluid level in the pan to the height of the gear select shaft.

The car was sitting long indeed - for over 2 months now. I will be checking the fluid level for sure, but do I think right that if this is the case (and most probably is), the leaking will stop at some point and the fluid level should still be OK? Or I still need to replace the gear shaft seal?

Are you positive it is transmission fluid? Trans fluid is red (ideally) From the photo its hard to tell if that is trans fluid or motor oil. Look at your white oil filter in that photo. Is that black dot a drop of oil? If yes, then it could be that as you drive the motor oil is dripping and blowing back and misting that part of the transmission.
Just a thought. might be way wrong but leaks can be deceiving.
when you look at the picture the oil filter looks to have a drop of oil on the bottom. could be from when it was installed that the installer didn't take time to wipe it off or the seal on the oil filter is dried up and needs to be replaced. I use grease on the rubber seal when I install an oil filter it won't dry out. Were I was going with this is the shifter cable seems to be in line with the filter, when you put a white rag to the wet spot is it red or brown.

I noticed the drop on the oil filter too, it's not the case as this drops only very little. And the major leak fluid is red (almost orange).
Your best bet, is probably putting some UV trace dye in both the engine crankcase and the tranny fluid. You can get the the dye that shows up different colors under the UV trace light. Maybe green for the engine, and orange for the tranny. Also, sometimes when an auto tranny filter plugs, fluid can blow out the vent tube. Had this happen before, and changing out to a good quality name brand filter, solved it.
Hello guys, after a while I'm back with a little update. Finally I was able to trace the spot from where the trans. fluid was leaking. Can you please check the photo and advise what is needed to fix this? The main leak is at point nr. 1. There are some drops also at point nr. 2 (not sure how those could get there). Thank you.
