Default 2 beat tha heat

My 80 is running pretty warm in North Texas in the summer. Yep, so does every car. You know that's right but that dont make it right. So i'm thinking auxillary fan unit to start with. Any recommendations? I know there are some pricey installs but I want to keep cost down. Also, I'm thinking, since car came from a colder climate, maybe the thermostat is a higher temp. Could this be a logical thought? Car has 33K original miles and think was driven mostly in Illinois/Kentucky. And, A/C not really very cool. Freon is topped off, A/C & heat bypass valve replaced but somewhere in my flawed logic I'm thinking there is connection linking high engine heat/low a/c cooling together. But then......

Make sure that the vacuum operated cut-off valve for the coolant flow to the heater core is working properly. It is mounted on the passenger inner front fender well and should cut the coolant flow off to the heater core when the air conditioning is turned on.

What do you consider pretty warm and does this happen on highway or low speed driving? Try going with a 180 thermostat to start with. Make sure the fan clutch hasnt developed a leak. When is the last time the system was flushed. Do basics with existing system before reengineering.

Define "pretty warm." 200-220 is not over heating. If you're staying in the 235-240 range, you have system problems an auxiliary fan is not likely to help you with.

Is the radiator in good shape? Stock fan and clutch in working order? Stock fan shroud and support seals in place?

Coolant level topped up?

Re the a/c, a few things come to mind, but due to the age of these cars, check for proper sealing (or missing) of the weather stripping attached to the rear of the hood. W/O a proper seal here, engine bay heat will find its way into the duct work resulting in higher a/c temps at the vents.
