I recently had my carbs rebuilt by a local shop and now when I really floor it, I smell gas in the car. Anyone have any thoughts as to why this may be? I checked for leaks when I shut it off last night and didn't see any and the engine compartment doesn't smell like gas after it's shut off but it is strong when it's running...
Well, you could hope for what happened to me last year:
I was driving to visit a friend. Nice easy cruising. The last 500 yards have a couple of fun turns w/ hard acceleration and braking. There I smelled gas. So we opened the hood and started replacing hoses (It had rained before so there were a lot of wet spots...) Fired up again: fine!
Drove a little bit: Horrible gas smell.
Finally figured it out...
Ready?
The attendant at the gas-station didn't close the cap properly- the :troll
I had a similar thing happen. Gas smell, couldn't find a source or cause. It was the vented gas cap, apparently there is an emissions test to see if this is the cause.
I used to have a really bad gas smell too, and It turned out the fuel lines on the gas tank were rotted and leaking out onto my mufflers....not good, but easy to fix.

Joe... you say "carbs".... so I assume you have TriPower?
It's possible that the "local shop" did not adjust the floats properly, or they just did a "dry adjustment" and didn't follow up with a wet final tweak using the sight plugs. The wet adjustment is always necessary on the 2300 Holleys.
This can cause some fuel spillage on hard acceleration, especially if you have one of the early bowls with the vent on top.
Just one possibility.
