I'm in the process of rebuilding a small block and installing a Vintage Air system for my '72 convertible. The car will be a driver and plan on putting a lot of highway miles on it taking it to car shows. I'm interested in the following opinions related to the cooling fan and belts:
- Should I stick with the clutch driven fan or do people recommend electric fans? The engine had no cooling issues with the clutch fan last summer on the hottest days.
- Any recommendation on belt systems? Would a serpentine system be more reliable or have other benefits?
If it ran cool with the mech. fan last year, why change it. I put dual spals in my car when I rebuilt it but that was due to the fact that it came in pieces with no shroud.
"Don't fix it if it ain't broke"!!!
There's nothing to be gained with an electric fan (or water pump) from an HP point of view.
The standard belt drives are very efficient and reliable so I'd leave things be.
Good points. The only reason I was considering a serpentine system now is that I'm replacing the PS pump, water pump and getting a new AC compressor with the vintage air system.
