After my last problem where I got the car stuck in first gear I reached under and grabbed the shift rods and got it freed up.
Today, took the car out to find out I have reverse, third and fourth. Moving the shifter to the first or second positions gives nothing, no resistace, no clunk feeling of hitting the gear. Acts like it is in neutral. Im guessing this is just a shift linkage problem. Where do I start...point me in a direction.
It sounds like the 1st/2nd rod has become disconnected. You probably sheared a spring clip. I would visually inspect the linkage and all the attachment points. It also sounds like you should adjust the linkage.
Really if you are going to do all this shifter work you might as well go get a new shifter, look in the archives for a good one. I heard the Hurst comp or something was great.
Ouch ! :( .....that really sucks - a 4spd into a 2spd ???
....yeah it definitely sounds like the 1st & 2nd linkage rods aren't 'connecting' or way too loose to even work. Probably a new shifter wouldn't be a bad idea either.... Good luck !
I kept having similar problems and in all cases either the linkage had gotten loose and got flipped in a bind or had come completely off. I ended up replacing the bolt, lock washer, and put thread-lock on it and really wrenched it down. No problems since.
Thanks for the replies...the only hard part about this is getting under there. This is not what I wanted with my engine project coming up! That figures right???!!!
