Started my roller cam swap and head gasket change.Disassembled the motor for the new cam and found the exhaust valves looking like this!
[IMG][/IMG]
Cylinders 5 & 7white exhaust valves, compression test before removal were 151 and 153 psi.All cylinders were in the 150-156 range.
Cylinder 8 looked similar, the plugs were white like the exhaust valve.Any ideas why they look different from the other cylinders? Also why are my intake ports black? Shouldn't they look clean and not sooty?? Was running a solid cam, could I have had the valves adjusted wrong on those cylinders with the white exhaust valves?? Thanks

Back in the day used to look for White-Grey exhaust ports on used engines. If they were all that color and uniform that is the engine you want. Does yours use any oil? Those white exhaust valves are fine. The others might have some slight wear at guides or a little oil getting past the oil rings. Black intake ports could be PCV vapors ,leaky intake manifold gaskets or rich carb. This could also be causing the deposits your seeing in the cylinders. #8 sometimes runs a touch leaner because the vacuum fitting is usually in that runner. If your compression is good and oil consumption is low I wouldn't worry about it. Didn't you change carbs recently? Could be leftover deposits from your previous carb running rich.
Slight oil consumption, not excessive. However I did notice lack of any thread sealant on the head bolts when removing them.A Felpro 7732pt2 head gasket was used. Will be installing a 1094 head gasket for better quench and more compression.New head bolts and thread sealant for installation.Always felt the motor was not running to its full potential.
#8 plug far right:

Since you have a new carb, and your R&R heads and cam assemble correctly and install new plugs. The oily looking plugs are not right (2&4). The ones you can see the porcelin inners look good. The fouling could easily be your previous carb. Run the new plugs a couple hundred miles after assembly and check them again.
Will do! So the white looking plugs and exhaust valves are good. It's the sooty ones that's bad.....
Yup,dual plane intake,Edelbrock Air Gap to be exact....Same size jets both sides.
Noticed ports on intake manifold clean on 5,7,8...sooty on the others.Sucking oil from valley?? Intake gaskets appeared to be sealed well.Felpro 1205,Edelbrock heads...Tips to seal those intake ports??

Mr Gasket Ultraseal intake gaskets. The only thing I use.
so what didn't you like about that crower 00320 cam? it looks interesting, 230/236/112 .022" lash.
i emailed crower for the duration at lash, and they didn't know
i took that as a bad sign.
.
what specs on the new cam?
