Default volt meter gauge not working

'81 the volt meter gauge in the dash cluster is not working.
Where do you suggest I start looking.

The needle is pegged to the left. After driving a while the car starts but sounds like if it didn't catch the battery might not spin it again. I charge the battery occasionaly.

I got the car in Nov I cranked it perodically in the winterr and the meter was working. I wonder why it quit.

All other gauges are working, all fuses are good. The altenator looks new, but I don't really know anythingabout it.

BTW, this forum is great. Thaks to all the support and information I hve received. (But if I don't quit reading it at work I may need to lok a new job

Does the battery hold charge? If not, 1) I would say the alternator isn't working, or has a wire open some where. 2nd does the Gen lt. come on just before you try to start the car? I had some problems with my alternator not working because the Gen lt. out. Don't really know why, the wiring schematic show the Gen lt. in line with the alt. You may need to get your hand son a schematic and just trace the wires. Using an ohm meter. Any idea what that is or how to use one?
