Default 68 with 67 frames, which years?

I'm not up to speed on my C3's, but I'm trying to help grandfather out with his 68. I was hoping someone with a little bit of knowledge on the early model C3's could weigh in.

He wants to increase the wheels on his car from a 15x7 to a 15x8 with a 225/70R15. However, in my research I had read that some of the 68's came with 67 frames and therefore the tie-rods rub on the tire with a rim wider then 15x7.

Does anyone know how long those 67 frames where used in the 68's? His car was built in Feb/68.

Thanks for the help

Tyler

No 68's had 67 frames. From the #4 body mount they were a different shape and all the mounts are different. A 225-70-15 tire with Corvette 8" wheels bolt right on. Same as a 69.

That's great news! I had read post # 7 and I had seen another post on a different forum that had echoed something similar.

I appreciate the assistance with this.

15x8 Corvette rally wheels will bolt right up.

Your source is incorrect.

Never. You do understand that 68 model year production began in August of 1967 and that every part used through December 31, 1967 was -technically- a 1967 part.

Thanks. I knew the wheels would bolt up, I was just looking for either the dates of the "smaller" frame or validation that this didn't exist. I've got my answers now thanks to the speedy help on here.

I picked up one of the sources on this forum; everything you read on the internet is true right? This is a snippit from the post I had referenced above:

"I put a set of 8X15 rims from a 78 (the aluminum slotted OEM rims) on my early 68 roadster. I had a new set of 225 70R 15 tires mounted and thought everything was good to go. Not so. The rears are fine. The fronts are not. The 68's tie rod ends were touching the inside sidewall of the tires. Either use a spacer and push the tire out 3/8 in....After some research I discovered that I had actually a 67 frame. I guess there are a lot of them out there. The 67 frame was a carry-over from 67 and I understand lots of them were used. Anyway the front spindles and bearings on a 68 are smaller than than from a 69 through 82."

You mean they didn’t start making 1968 Corvette’s on January 01?

It is true that '68s used a different spindle than '69 and later, but the frame itself has no bearing on this. The poster you quoted was badly misinformed.

I know of many people who have used '69 and up rims on earlier cars without issue.

Nope. I am certain the plant was closed every New Year's Day so no Corvettes were assembled on any January 1.

New model year Corvette assembly almost always began in August. There are exceptions, but an August start up date was typical.

I would assume so too...I was just being facetious

Thanks Mike Ward on the spindle note. That's a nice "good to know" piece potentially.
