Dipstick Tip?

I have a '70 with a L-46 small block. I removed the oil dipstick tube for an engine rebuild. It was cracked and needing replacement anyway. So, now I can't seem to slip the new one in. Can anyone give me some tips on installation? Since it's slightly curved, I don't see a simple means of tapping it in. Ideas?

Its held in place with an O-ring. Just push on it, it will go in. You were used to the old, beat up O ring that just pulled right out. Wouldnt hurt to put some fresh oil on it to help it 'find home'.

my 69 does not have an o ring and yes a new tube can be stubborn , i slide a wrench 3/8" i think over the tube with the wrench on the raised part of the tube tap on the wrench it should slide on in with a little lube.

A pair of slip-joint pliers will work also. Lightly grip the tube with the round portion of the jaws and tap in with a small hammer, etc.

Make sure engine block is hot when trying to install...use propane torch possibly

I stick a "stubby" phillips screwdriver in the end and just tap it in with a hammer.

I usually tap it in with a rubber/hard plastic mallet or if you have the room use a 7/16 wrench or whatever fits snug on the tube and press it against the small flare that bottoms out on the block.

If it is a new tube it may be slightly flared out at the end that goes into the block. File the outside of the tube and try it. It should go in with a bit of resistance but not so much so that you will bend the tube. I use a small bit of silicone sealer at the shoulder of the tube to prevent any possible leaks.
