Hey Guys,
I had to rebuild my front calipers on my 77 due to a leak from the front driver's side caliper. My question is regarding the retaining rings. Do you just knock them in there and they are supposed to stay or is there some special way to install them? Any help would be great.
Just did mine last month.
Which rings are you talking about? The metal seal with the rubber boot that sits on the outside? Or the rubber lip seal that goes around the middle of the piston?
I'm guessing your talking about the metal seal. You just knock them in... carefully. Don't bend them. Make sure they're flush with the outer surface of the caliper. Before you do, put some RTV on the recess on the piston where the rubber boot goes. Then, after you install the seal, push some RTV sealant into the groove between the seal and the caliper. This is supposed to help with the air pumping problem.
ahhhhh haaaa haaaa.sorry to do that but I just did mine last weekend and those dust rings can be a pita.be careful and note that you are putting the lip correct way facing or it won't hardly go in.Even when you have it correct way they are a b-i-zitch to keep other side from popping back out.I used a pvc union about size of rings and got it to go in.I also used a dull screw driver and worked the piston seal into caliper.DON'T TRY AND FORCE THE PISTON SEAL IN
I used a 2x4 and a fairly large c-clamp. Get them lined up, the slowly tighten the c-clamp. Be sure they are lined up though, if it don't start and one edge catches, you will distroy it.
Good luck!
