I went down that road too. I used a Mallory CD box with a rev limiter. Went back to the factory TI. Easier starts and better idle with the TI than I ever got with the Mallory. IT's still on the car, and a pretty simple changover in case the 40+ year old TI gives up. It'll get me home.
did someone with a large duration, big overlap cam ever use an MSD-6A to cure idle issues. Did it help ?
The ignition itself doesn't cure idle issues, but recurving the distributor to allow more initial timing while maintaining optimum total timing (approx. 35°-38°) will help tame the idle of a high overlap cam.
The 6AL definitely improved my idle. Enough to justify the cost? Not so sure. It definitely idles and runs better than it did with the HEI unit that it replaced.
My 6AL helped with idle quality and helped with initial start-up.
My cam is not huge. Its a hydraulic roller with about 230 deg at .050 but it idles a little rough. Not sure why such a mild cam has a rough idle, but the Comp Cams catalog even says it idles rough. The MSD 6 definitely smoothed out the idle. Didn't provide much other advantage though.
