Purchased my 1980 L48 (350, 5.7) last year & realized the fuel vapor canister was missing, the line from the fuel tank capped off where the canister was installed. Since the emission control was removed I just figured a free flowing vented cap was installed so the tank could breathe only to my surprise it was a pressurized cap, pressure built up & went off one day when standing behind the car. Nobody makes a free flowing vented cap that I could find. Went on line looking to purchase a 80 replacement canister with a removable bottom & downspout, good luck nobody makes one for a 1980 350 5.7, they make a larger completely sealed one that fits a 305 5.0 (California) & 81 that are interchangeable. Did find a pretty used one on ebay, it was better then nothing but would like a new one if possible or a good substitute. Anyone have similar issues & what did you do? Since I have no emission control to deal with I was looking on ebay and found ones for a 1974-77, looks pretty basis & simple with a tank feed input and a output port, I think I could use this and vent it back through the PCV, the carb, & even through the air filter. Split the output line a few times to spread out the gas fumes back to the engine. Looking for some feed back on whether this would work or not, don't want to create another problem. Thanks all !
Cant you just vent the current cap with a tiny drill bit?
I did consider that but was hoping to use the canister method. At present I just don't screw the cap real tight I back it off a turn or too so air flows around the threads. Someone out there had to have the same problem at some point in time.
There were 2 of these one with a bracket & one without for $49.95, purchased the one without a bracket. They say its not the one in the pic but similar, since they are not tested its a gamble hope its in good shape. As for the charcoal I heard it can be replaced with aquarium filter charcoal? Has anyone tried this?

Yes, I cut half the grate off the bottom of my canister off with a dremel tool, bought a new filter from Willcox and some aquarium filter charcoal from pet smart. Filled the canister up about 3/4 of the way, slid the filter in and then epoxied the grate back in. Very easy fix.

I pulled the check valve out of the fuel cap. No more pressure build up and no canister.
