I've been wrestling with a poor idle during warm up for past several weeks (since new Dart heads, Hedman headers and q-jet rebuild). The choke comes on immediately and the engine revs for about a minute and then it gradually drops down to where idle is and then the engine dies (instead of staying running fast enough until warm).
Once I put it in gear it dies and even after I re-start and get the car moving it dies if I come to a stop (Have to keep one foot on brake and the other foot on the gas).
Once the engine is warm, no problem; it idles really nice.
Is this something that I should adjust choke fast idle screw to correct or is there something else (such as the leaky vacuum line gremlins?)?
I had same problem sometime back and I fiddled with the choke housing little by little. I presume you have the QJ with an electric choke. I would try adjusting the black choke housing a little to the left (rich). Simply loosen the three screws, move it a little, tighten up. Try it next morning (or apply ice to it for awhile) and see if it improves. Trial and error will get it right. You know you've gone too far when choke stays on past when you need it to.
I think you have the problem because you have lost your heat riser with change to headers, so now you will have to adjust the choke to compensate for lack of hot exhaust gas warming the intake.
