I've got a 70 stingray 4 speed. I was looking through the owner's manual and I found this about the shifter:
"If desired, the shift linkage may be adjusted to allow "short stroke" shift lever operation. See your Chevrolet dealer."
Anyone know how this is done? I'd like to have a tigher shift but I don't want to use any of the aftermarket shifters. I've heard the aftermarket versions disable the reverse lockout.
The shifter arms have two positions to place the shifter rod. The inside or shortest hole will give you a shorter throw. You may have to readjust the linkage when done.
On your tranny there are levers that bolt to the side of the transmission and then the shifter rods attach to them. There are two holes drilled in these levers. The rods are attached to the holes furthest from the pivot point on the transmission......this give you the long throw.......simple geometry:crazy: . To make your shifter short throw you need to reposition the shifter rods to the other holes. To accomplish this, the first thing that has to be done is make a special tool (see your maintenance manual, I have a Haynes manual and a picture of the tool is on page 7A-3) to place in the shifter to keep all the gates inline when you remove the rods. I had a hard time getting to the area where the tool goes from under the car. I think it may be easier if you take the console apart and go at it from the top. After the tool is installed all you have to do is remove the two rods(from under the car), adjust them to the inner holes closest to the piviot points, reattach them, remove the tool and have fun "short shifting". I have some pictures of the shifter out of the car and where the tool goes. I can e-mail them to you if you want.

Re: Short-shift alteration for c3 (Arkansas Flash)
i have a 79 and there is only one hole in each linkage piece...
is this long, short or in between??
if it is not short shift, can i use the linkage from an earlier tranny to make this mod?
Re: Short-shift alteration for c3 (Arkansas Flash)
I'd like to see those pictures if you wouldn't mind e-mailing them to me.
Sure no problem. Give me a little bit of time, I need to find them in my archives of digital photos. It may be different than mine being a 1978 Corvette.

I believe you have a Super T-10 tranny. I have seen guys talking about only having one hole in their later modle C3's tranny levers also. Maybe on the Super T-10 tranny they only put one hole in the lever. I don't know if you can use Muncie levers on a T-10.
On my 80 there is only one hole, so I switched the shifter arms
to the short throw arms sold be Mid America ( they are supposed
to be for 84-88 4+3's) but they work fine and shorten the throw
quite a bit. Now there is not such a large difference between my C5
with a Hurst shifter and my C3
Re: Short-shift alteration for c3 (BOBS-2001-CONV)
i wonder if they will fit my 79??
can i buy them online?

I'm sure they will fit your 79. They cost around 20 bucks. The Mid America
part number is 603-709 Short Throw Shifter Kit. You can call the 800 number to order them.
