Default Need New Converter with 383?

I'm replacing my 355 with a 383 stroker. I will be using the existing Trick Flow 23 heads, the same Edelbrock Performer intake manifold and 650 carb. I will bump up the cam a little but nothing radical. I'm keeping the 350 trans and rear gears. It's going to be a Saturday night cruiser and show car. Never going to see red line. Not going to race it. Everything is built for low to mid range power. It has about 40,000 easy miles on it. Do I need to replace my factory torque converter for the type of driving I plan to do?

Thanks

John

I think you can retain the current converter.it depends on the cam.the 383 could handle 5 more degrees duration on the cam and idle better then the 355.

If all that is accurate I don't see any need to change your converter.

I have almost the identical motor. My cam has about 220 deg duration and I have a 3000 stall convertor in my 700R4 and the motor loves it. You won't need more than the stock convertor, but it could handle it if you install enough cam.

I put a 2800 stall in my 700r4 and it does great with my 383. I was told that I needed that much stall for my motor to idle at lights etc. If not, it would bogg out. Never tried it w/ stock converter.

What cam are you going to be running? It sounds like a stock convertor will be fine.

Had a CompCams XE268H with stock converter (1800 stall) and that combo caused some bogging when pulling away slowly. Now have a 383 with XE247H and a B&M holeshot 2200 to 2400 stall and that's a nice, smooth combination.

In short: reference your cam manufacturer for stall advice. CompCams for instance note advised stall with all their cams. http://www.compcams.com/Company/CC/c...x?csid=22&sb=2

it is real easy to kill torque. just use an open carb base gasket(instead of a thick 4 holer), or a manifold with a cut down divider. and then it might need a higher stall.
