Greetings, I want to replace my cracked bumper on my 73 with a Urethane bumper. Several places, Zip, Central and Mid-America, have what are labelled OEM at around $850-900, but I have also found a reproduction bumper at Year One for $799 and another reproduction at Ecklers for $449. Has anybody installed a bumper from any of these houses and can they comment on quality?
The $900 OEM bumper, is a GM part, not a repro. It's about the only urethane bumper that GM still has inventory of. The quality will be comparable to original, because it's an original part.
I haven't had any experience with the Eckler's repro. I'm pretty sure that it is being made by (or for) them.
Personally, I would go with a fiberglass repro, instead of urethane, unless your going for NCRS judging. Unlike urethane, the fiberglass bumper will never loose it's shape, or get wavy. Also, unless your painting the whole car, with a fiberglass bumper if it doesn't fit right, you can sand, grind and fill a fiberglass bumper. If the urethane bumper isn't fitting correctly, your only choice is to do body work on your car's nose.
