Default Over-gapping plugs?

Thought my 427 ran okay on 93octane, but today was the first time I took it on a long drive on a hot Texas day, and boy were them valves a'rattlin and a'pingin'. Mixed in some lead substitute AND a bottle of octane booster, still rattling under load.

So, I'm thinking I'll retard the timing a bit. I also read in a thread somewhere that you can gap the plugs .010" over & that will help. Is that true, and if so, why does it help?

Try the retard first, JB. And talk to the boys at The Corvette Store on I-10 at West Ave. They've got a stable full 'o rats that aren't pinging!

if you weren't having any pinging problems before it got warm then maybe you could try plugs a couple of heat ranges cooler. if the gap didn't ping the cylinders before it got warm then you must have enough spark for the RPMs your running. however, now that it's getting warmer, you may be putting a hotter air/fuel charge in the chamber and it's auto-igniting off the plug. just a thought--i get the same thing from my car and have tried similar fixes but have yet to go with the cooler plugs, on my to-do list.

Thanks, guys. Clutchdust--BTW, don't know if you saw my recent thread about "My new favorite tool," but I really love your idea about using PCV pipe for bleeding brakes. I've also been using it to keep my clutch in so I can reach through the gap between the door and the windshield & turn the car over and still see the engine (yes, I'm too cheap to by a remote starter switch).

hey, i didn't think of that! i would, however, be a bit surprised if PVC could keep my clutch pedal depressed. you can bet i'm going to try it now.
