John65,
I have thought about that alot today..the du pont chrome base I have used gallons of.. It the dust aspect and getting a good quality job..I could visqueen off the garage, wet the floor and seal, but getting good circulation so when overspray falls it dosnt come back on my surface..
Your right it could be done with my experience and getting a sealed environment perhaps....Its not easy, but possible..buffing also your friend in the end for sure for some of it...thanks for the tip...
I told my boy i would paint his jeep this summer but planned on getting 100% ready and on a calm afternoon laid it on!!! bugs is also another concern in the midwest...Moths,fly's and such seem to love to get in it and swirm and swirl.. been there several times!! even in a paint booth!! Good call though...Im not ruling it out for sure...
I was going to try and work a deal with him, I use his booth, and help him labor wise a few weekends or something also...
Indiancreek,
when you assembly you booth seal it tight.. use vulcum, construction adhesive advesive or equal.. You want everything air tight as possible..
even the doors.. Not sure what your unit is or cfm pull and im not familair with the bottom flow booths but do the basics of taping eveything off good (using 3m tape) and with a bottom pull you want to spray from the top down as best feesible..This pushes your overspray down as you go so its not touching what you just painting leaving dry streaks...blocks or stands are good.. the further you get it off the dust and dirt of the floor the better...Even after painting your overspray settles on the ground...you walk around and kick it up and notice it when your spraying lower panels...wet the floor and squeegie right before spraying, do your final wipe... then go for it....
Its been awhile, be glad to help with any other questions...
p.s. you guys are making me want to get back into it after all this talk...
The one thing I will emphazise when painting, primering, sealing is to wear a epa mask ...my lungs are f-up from painting as a kid and not wearing a mask as much as I should have!!! now im paying the price....These chemicals are serious stuff guys...
I'm in the same boat as some of you guys. I did a fair amount of painting about 15-20 years ago with centari and imron, but so much has changed since then. Don't even think I can get either of those paints in CA any more. I am planning on starting the body and paint part of my project soon. Just need to get the body on the new chassis first. Hope to have her done this summer.
I would make this suggestion on either frame-off or frame-on painting: Run a ground cable chain from the vehicle to either the floor or a grounding spike set in the floor. You'd be surprised at the amount of static elec. that sanding and prep can cause.

Here's my sealed enviroment. Grab a bucket of water and sand that dust out of there. I just blocked off the compressor. Go for it !
I try to lay paint mid morning or at least durning daytime to help avoid light attracted bugs. Also, I mop the floor and leave it extra wet to keep dust down.
I like the grounding idea.. use to spray with electrostaic gun that was mobile, painting in grocery stores...it had to be ground to whatever your painting..The paint would suck right to the charge...otherwise the painter was the ground....ikes....
Here's a question, how much would it cost to 'repair' a clear coat that is flaking? My car has pretty good paint everywhere except for from the front tires forward...has some clear coat flaking. I've heard everything from "you have to sand down everything thing and start over" to "a talented guy may be able to blend it in without major problems". Any opinions from those who have had the problem? I'm not looking for a 'permanent' solution, just something that will last a few years until I can get the whole car repainted.
say the word corvette, ....and they add 10k to their estimate eveytime.
after several estimates, I completed the paint in my garage.
and would do it again! Paint is easy, and fast, ..... Prep is Not !

I've done a few where we just wet sanded the clear off the car, being very careful not to go too deep into the base coat. Actually on one we wet sanded the entire car and only coated the bad sections with clear. Have to buff out the entire car anyways to bet a matching shine. Really, it's up to the painter and his skill levels.
Ive been doing some reasearch on some fresh paint for the vet. I called a guy I went to high school with who only does custom builds and paint..He said if I wanted a show car paint job any color and s/s racing stripes expect 8-10,000...Ive seen his work and trophies, but I think that may be out of my league right now..I wish i could rent a spray booth for a weekend!!
What ballpark did some of you guys have to fork out for a nice job? and what kind of paint? urethane top coat, du pont clear? single stage, lacquer??
I use to paint 20 yrs ago and back then the most expensive color was cherry red at 200.00 half gallon..I see times have changed big time in that area!!!
The cost of the paint job on a Vette is hard to determine since most of the cost will be body work and prep. The extent of bodywork needed really can't be determined until the old paint is stripped and the panels are examined. I have seen a lot of nice paint jobs turn to crap because of poor or no prep work. Almost any shop can spray a shiny coat of paint on a car and do a decent job.
Stripping the car, repairing delaminated seams, spyder cracks, previous bad repairs and then flattening the panels for a high quality finish takes hundreds of hours of labor. A show paint job on any 35yr old Vette would start at $12K and go up from there.
A scuff and re-spray wit some minor repairs could run $2500 and up for a quality job.
