Just had to share, I'm a nervous wreck and nobody else would understand. The car is currently in the paint booth and every single blemish I see is my fault...what a responsibility. I've gotten used to the gray primer since it's pretty much been this color for ten years or so. It was recently sanded and reprimed so it was a brighter gray.
Red is SO very bright. I now wish I had sanded it four more times. If anyone takes this on, the only advice this newbie can give....if you think you've sanded enough do it again, and once more for good measure. Geez, I think I'm going to :U
Sorry, being a girl here. Hopefully finished pics by Tuesday
Shannon....unless it's too late....don't paint the car until it looks perfect in primer. Paint won't and can't hide anything. As long as you're going to do this, you might as well do it right. I've been there and it will really bug you that you got impatient and didn't listen to "your little voice". What you can do is have the painter put on what they call a "guide coat" in the red you've chosen. This coat will not completely cover the gray and that's the idea. You can then block sand the red off and you will see the flat spots, dings, and other imperfections as you go. Use a 400...or 600 grit wet or dry sandpaper (wetsanding of course) until you're happy with the way it looks. Then...it will be time for the finish coat....and even though it probably won't be absolutely perfect.....you will be very happy with the way it looks.
