that is about as good as a good kick in the n$%s!!! I used to do it in a '72 caddy coupe deville with a 472. Lots of fun but very, very bad. I used to drive in reverse at about 15mph and than slam it in drive and floor it. That thing would keep going backwards for about 50 yards and just melted the tires.
Not good at all. Putting that kind of power into it before the clutches can lock means that they slip and slipping is bad. It wears the clutches. When they start slipping under normal driving conditions then you know the transmission is fried. It's not good for your u-joints either. With that said, it's still a lot of fun. That was the only way I could get our powerglide Corvair to spin the tires.
While your at it drive down the road at 65 MPH and slam it in Reverse. Should yield the same results on your tranny.
Eventually it will puke in many peices on the road just when you really need the car.
If you really hate your transmission it's a great idea
This buddy of mine used to have an old Pontiac Lemans he bought for $50, no brakes, so when he wanted to stop he'd throw it in reverse and light up the tires  funniest damn thing ever. We used to run over shopping karts with it, got one stuck one time in a field and had to get 4 jacks to jack up the car, we pulled out the kart and kicked the car off the jacks  the car was a POS but man was it fun to beat on. He also used to turn the key off and pump the gas pedal then fire the car up while driving around the neighborhood at 2am, he blew the muffler clean off one time. What kids do for entertainment :jester
Ah yes, lots of fun memories on this subject. When I was in my late teens and got my first car running, I used to rev my motor to 7000 and drop it into gear. With that motor, the TH400 and the 5.57 gears I had in it at the time, it would put on quite a show :D The tranny lasted for several years, but did eventualy die. I destroyed the inside of the tranny and had to replace the outer case too. The guy that rebuilt it said that he had never seen anyone destroy the case like that before.
Okay, so we have established that it is BAD but also fun ;) So I guess I should cut it out (even though I have only done it a few times). Eventually, I will be getting rid of the 4L60E anyway, but I want it to last a while!
Isn't that how the ZL-1 with slicks got that 10 second time- reving the 500+hp engine to the redline then droping it into gear.
I think Superfast80 has the artical posted.
When I got my big block I couldn't resist dumping the clutch a few times before I got new tires. BUT one time I was in 3rd and smoked the clutch instead!! It survived, but used 8 of it's 9 lives with that little stunt:)
Back in high school, one of my buddies had an old blue Ford sedan (don't know what model) that he bought for $200. It was from the early 1970's, with a white fabric top. We'd take it out to the industrial parks at night, get up to about 45 mph, then drop it in reverse. MAN THAT WAS FUN! Car would go skipping all over the road, like a flat rock on water.

Well, I couldn't let this one go by without commenting on my experience. I was driving my dad's '78 Buick Limited and was going about 40mph. It had a very loose shifter (A/T) and I accidentally knocked the shifter into reverse while reaching for the radio. The car was already old at the time and I was only 16, what can I say? Anyway, no apparent damage was done to the tranny. The car just shut down. I stopped the car and started it up again and everything seemed fine. We never had any problems after that. I guess most cars probably have some sort of cut off for such instances. That would make sense.
Did the same thing in my parents 77 Olds Delta 88, car just went dead. I used to brake torque the hell out of that thing so I was glad it didn't spit tranny parts everywhere.
Neutral drops are bad for you!! I did one in a mall parking lot at 11:30pm. i got pulled over about 30 seconds later (i guess the cop saw the 30 ft high smoke cloud) and i got a reckless driving ticket. it was later reduced to a 3 point speeding but it was still just enough to tip me over the line and have my licence suspended for 2 1/2 months. the cool thing was that i only revved to about 3 grand before i dropped it and i never budged. my vette actually started moving backwards because i was on a slight incline. After having my auto class i learned how bad neutral drops are and i wont be doing any more.
on a second note i saw a guy in a jeep cherokee destroy all of his driveshaft bolts and probably the u-joints too. he red lined the jeep and threw it in gear. BOOM bolt pieces everywhere. it was hillarious because i didnt like him. luckyfor him he had 4-wheel drive and was able to limp home.
He also used to turn the key off and pump the gas pedal then fire the car up while driving around the neighborhood at 2am, he blew the muffler clean off one time. What kids do for entertainment :jester
those are called " Key Poppers " my friend has an old scout that does that. Its fun to watch everyone hit the deck when you do it.

I don't think they revved it up to redline, that would result in quite a bit of tire smoke and no forward motion :D. I do remember hearing about that though, they probably did neutral drop the tranny but I highly doubt it was at redlining RPMs.
You read the title correct. 1986 Dodge Aries-K. 135 cu in of love. Neutral drops all day long (smoking the hell out of one tire!) with the e-brake on. It was even more fun with snow tires  What a fun piece of crap that thing was. Sold it with 186,000 miles to a cab co. yes with the original tranny. Probably had some very thrashed motor mounts though. Boy, I used to be cool

Dude, not sure how the law works in CO, but here in IL the cops can't give you a ticket in places such as a mall parking lot. It's private property. Now if someone from the mall called and complained, you could potentially be wearing matching bracelets....
yea unfortinuatley in CO, they can ticket you for DUI, careless and reckless in a parking lot.
but the lot was completly empty and there wasnt anyone arround so i think he was fair.
But at least when he pulled me over he was yelling about how i was a stupid moronic dumb a s s etc... thats actually the reason it was dropped to a 3 point speeding. the city attorney knew the cop that gave me the ticket and wanted to completly dismiss it, but she knew the judge that day wouldnt go for it. she lowered it as much as she thought the judge would allow, and he barely did allow it. sux for me.
I taught myself how to rebuild a powerglide doing those :jester . In '71 I got my mothers old car, a '64 Impala SS with a 327/300. After I put 4.11's in the back, none of the small block Ruststang the kids in school drove could touch it (and not many of the 390's either). Neutral drops from about 3000 RPM were the norm. So was going through the powerslide about every other month  When I noticed it start to slip, I would drop the trans and throw a new set of cluthes and a band in it. It would only cost about $35 or so and about 3 hours of time. A lot of guys wondered how the powerslide held up..... I never told how often I went through it.
