Default 81 Differential

Differential
What am I doing wrong? My passenger side output shaft is leaking. I took the differential out of the car. I removed the retaining ring for the shaft but the shaft will not come out. I noticed the ends of the teeth are warn a little by rubbing against the center shaft (don’t know the correct name for it).
Do I hit on the U-joint housing to force it out or is there another holder somewhere?
Thanks

the inside end mite be mushroomed.you mite need to push all the way in and file the end edge a little .or use a gear puller to pull it out.

Not normal. Mine came out of my 74 w/ no issues. Other than the C Clip was missing and the side play on the drivers side was about 1 1/2 inches!!

Welcome to the forum and good luck w/ your project.

Do as Gary said and use a file on it. Do NOT force anything or you may crack the housing.

that is about normal for these rear ends, both of mine were mushroomed just enough to make them a pain to get out, once you do get them out, take a small jewlers file and clean the ends up good, you also need to get down inbetween the splines too. then they should slide back in without a problem.

I got it out. I worked on the shafts all day cleaning up the teeth. The middle pin has some grooves in it as well. The rear end made no noise when I pulled it out it was just leaking on the output shaft. That is why I started this project.
Should I just get this one rebuilt due to the markings on the shafts and pin or will it be fine. I don't want to go through pulling this out again in the near future but if it is normal I will put the seals in and install it.

Traccdog in Texas has a good reputation with the late C3 units.

At the very least you need stub axles and a cross shaft. If you don't replace all three pieces now you will be doing this again very soon.
