I've made some progress with my ZZ383 and the Holley 4150 which sits on top... The car is running a set of McJack's headers and an Allen's chambered exhaust. the carb is 4150/3124 service replacement from my old '65 396..
I have the basics working fine... I need some help with setting up the vacuum secondaries.. I can get them to open fine but when they do there is a momentary flat spot where it takes a second or so before the full power is felt. There is no secondary accelerator pump.
The engine pulls 15" Hg at idle. Power valves are 6.5's front and back..
Can anyone give me an idea as to how to properly tune the secondaries??
The yellow spring is what would be in the carb if that was the original application and it may work for this one as well. Get the spring kit and open the vacuum motor to see what spring is now in there. Too light a spring will give you a fast-opening secondary. You tune the secondary opening to the point where you can't feel the opening, meaning nothing apparent seems to be happening. When it opens too fast or too soon, there is not enough airflow in the booster to draw fuel and you get a bog. When the bog or lag in the throttle goes away, that is where there is nothing apparent in the opening.
You don't really need the quick change kit, but if you've never changed a secondary spring, it's about a medium sized pain in the a$$ to do on the carb, in the car. It's not that hard to tear the diaphragm while re-installing it, too. For 17 bucks, it's money well spent if you are going to be playing around with secondary springs. Plus, it looks cool! Good luck!
