HELP !!!!! Advice needed on Replacing A/C Compressor
I was told today that the air conditioner compressor on my 82 was bad and that it would cost $1,200 to replace the compressor with a new AC Delco unit and recharge the system. The guy did not recommend replacing it with a rebuilt unit? Does this sound reasonable? Any advice on obtaining a new or rebuilt compressor would be appreciated. For $1,200 I can bear a lot heat, especially with the tops off.

RUN fro that crook as fast as you can, a brand NEW GM replacement compressor is only 180 bux if you have an account...what passes for 'wholesale'....
the expansion valve is only about 3 bux, and the receiver drier is only about 40 bux....NOW you see the true prices...
BTW, I do not recommend a new GM compressor...just a decent 80-100 buck rebuilt is fine....and besure to get a proper receiver/drier, some of them have an extra service access port that will not allow it to mount correctly as it hits the evap housing.....make sure you do NOT BEND THAT DAMN OUTPUT LINE!!!! it will kill the evaporator....

I tend to go with new Delco compressors as most rebuilt ones I've seen installed have not lasted very long. In MY opinion it is worth the extra $$ for a new unit. You will only have to do it once. A siezed compressor will contaminate the entire system and cuase you much more expence in the long run.

I'm in the middle of doing mine and I'm converting to R134a. I got a new compressor, dryer (with nipples..) a new valve and the R134a conversion kit from Napa... total cost $330 and it was really easy to change over.. except brakeing the connection between the old dryer and hose.. that suxed.. :smash: :smash: :smash: I'm bringing her in tomorrow to have the system flushed, vaccumed and filled. Wonder how much they're going to bang me for that.. I know it's a lot less than doing it with R12! $1,200 is still kind of high even if you go with the R12.. It's apx $100 a pound so $300 for R12, 330 for parts and $600 labor.. Do the conversion yourself and save the bucks for toys.. If you still want to stay with the R12 then do the change over work yourself and pay the guy to charge it..
