Default Changing exhaust system, manifolds too?

My 72 has a old exhaust system, know it's at least 15 years old. Been having engine issues when she gets warm. Had a terrific backfire today and blew both mufflers out. Recommendations on mufflers? Going to change exhaust system out, but not sure on changing the manifolds though, any great thoughts there?
Appreciate it.

McJacks shorty headers.
But I don't think it will solve your issues regarding the backfiring.

my 72 is the same way as with the age of the exhaust. I bought summit headers, plain black and plan on getting a pre fabbed 2.5" setup from corvette central. I'd get the other issues addressed quickly too if you are having that kind of a backfire.

You need to find out what is causing the backfire before you have four blown out mufflers.

Roger on the getting the backfire issue solved.
Seems the rough running and (now backfire) occur after the car has been running at normal temp for awhile, 20-30 minutes, runs beautifully till then. Cranks right over on start. Just replaced the coil and condenser chasing another problem. Ran well for a month and now this. Any issues/difficulty going though the whole timing regiment tune-up process with exhaust off the car? Giving serious consideration to new plug wires and plugs if the plugs are left after that backfire at all, Wow!

You need to check the timing chain, the only time that has happened to me it was severe slack in the timing set.

do you want more performance?do you want louder ?headers are good for those things .but stock manifolds dont have a lot of problems and will last a long time.your muffler choice depends on what you are after .

68 Post;

Looking for clarification, are you talking about backfiring after engine has been run for a while?

Anytime you have that bad of a backfire, whether your starting or while running.

Mine ran fine before and after a backfire that swelled the muffler to twice it's thickness.(sounded like a shotgun blast)

I had the three cam gear bolts - loose to finger tight.

Time to get rid of the camshaft nylon timing gear.

Unless you plan to run your motor high up in the rev range ,the stock manifolds will do just fine .
Just put a nice dual exhaust on with some Magnaflow mufflers
