IMHO quality jackstands are very safe when used correctly, and I'd bet the user is to blame for nearly every related incident.
Having almost lost an uncle to a car that fell onto him off of mis-used blocks, I'm very thorough about making certain a vehicle is properly supported and completely stable before working underneath one. That said, I think it's only natural to feel uncomfortable under there, and I always find myself whispering a prayer that a 'quake doesn't hit at the wrong moment.

For long periods of time and for simple better support of the nose I put stands under the sway bar bushings or under the lower control arm spring pockets. Depends where I have to work under the car.
I dont like leaving a big block hanging out over the frame with only the stands at the number 2 frame mount. Just too much beef hanging out in space.

I support my cars way off the ground up high. I support the vet at each end of the frame on the jack points and under the engine cross member in the front.
I also put several other jack stand under the car, not supporting the car but set up to but not touching the car, as close as I can get them.
I read the newspaper daily and every few years there is an article about some local person crushed by a car falling on them. Jack stand can be purchased very cheaply from the major chain stores and moved around easily when not supporting the car. Why not put several under the car and be safe.
